The Crown C-5 Series internal combustion forklift display panel monitors vital operating conditions. When the coolant temperature, transmission temperature, or engine oil pressure warning lights illuminate, they signal distinct operating conditions that exceed safe limits. While each light detects a different operating condition, the manufacturer operating instructions require the exact same operator action across all three: park the truck, shut it off, and require authorized service. Understanding these warning lights ensures operators immediately stop equipment and follow OSHA removal-from-service mandates without attempting unauthorized diagnosis or repair.
When a coolant temperature, transmission temperature, or oil pressure light illuminates, navigate out of active traffic aisles to a safe, level location. Fully lower the forks to the ground and apply the parking brake.
Turn the key switch to the off position immediately. Continued operation with low oil pressure or an overheated engine or transmission creates a severe hazard and risks extensive machine damage.
Record the exact illuminated indicator (amber or red coolant light, transmission temperature symbol, or oil pressure symbol) along with any display panel information, hour meter reading, and operating conditions.
Tag out the forklift to prevent use and report the defect immediately to maintenance or your supervisor in compliance with OSHA 1910.178(p)(1) and 1910.178(q)(1).

Crown Operator Manual 600034 Rev. D page 22 details the display indicators for the C-5 Series pneumatic forklift. The coolant temperature light indicates two distinct stages: an amber light signals that the system is beginning to overheat, while a red light indicates that the system has overheated. The transmission temperature light illuminates when the transmission has overheated. The oil pressure light illuminates when engine oil pressure is low.
Although each light monitors a different powertrain condition, Crown specifies the identical rule for all three: park the truck, shut it off, and obtain service. Operators must not continue operating or attempt troubleshooting when these lights illuminate.
The display panel warning lights alert the operator that an abnormal operating condition exists, but they do not identify which component failed. An oil pressure warning indicates low oil pressure, not the underlying cause. A coolant light indicates an overheating condition, not the specific mechanical defect. A transmission temperature light indicates an overheated transmission, not the specific failed part.
Because dashboard indicators signal abnormal conditions rather than specific component faults, operators must never attempt DIY disassembly or component diagnosis. Qualified evaluation and repairs must be performed by authorized personnel.
Federal regulation 29 CFR 1910.178 sets strict requirements for powered industrial truck safety. Under 1910.178(p)(1), any truck found to be in need of repair, defective, or in any way unsafe must be taken out of service until restored to safe operating condition. Section 1910.178(q)(1) mandates that all repairs be made by authorized personnel.
Furthermore, 1910.178(q)(9) mandates that when the temperature of any part of any truck exceeds its normal operating temperature, creating a hazardous condition, the vehicle must be removed from service until the cause of overheating is eliminated. Reporting defects promptly ensures compliant and safe fleet management.
